About

Dr. Leah Maihos is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW), professor, and psychotherapist in Massachusetts. She has a Master's in Social Work from Boston University and a Doctorate in Social Work from Simmons University. Dr. Maihos specializes in geriatric care within nursing homes and long-term care facilities. She believes staff need extensive training in geriatric care before working with residents. She developed a seminar and wrote a training manual on 20 aging and geriatric care topics for her dissertation project. The manual includes current literature, evidence-based practices, and various activities for participants to complete during the two-day training. The goal of this seminar is to educate staff on the needs of the geriatric population and person-centered care practices using independent exercises, social learning, and scaffolding their current knowledge. Dr. Maihos created the title “Your Workplace, My Home"™ to remind staff that although they are going to their place of employment, they are also entering a person’s home. While the purpose of this seminar is to deliver comprehensive information on geriatric care, Dr. Maihos hopes staff will recognize the potential impacts of a stranger working in their homes and reflect on how they would expect to be treated.
